Splendours of Mexico: Ancient and Modern

Study Day on Wednesday 9th March 2011 at 10:00AM

Lecturer: Ms Chloe Sayer
Venue: Bishopswood Village Hall

Few countries in the world offer such a rich and varied cultural heritage as Mexico. Before the Spanish Conquest of 1519, numerous civilizations rose and fell. The Aztecs (or Mexica) of Central Mexico have been described as warlike and bloodthirsty yet their creative achievements were breathtaking. They flourished between 1325 and 1521, when they surrendered to invading Spanish forces. We will be looking at their exceptional developments in art and architecture, miniature gold objects and ceramics. The ancient Mayan Civilization reached its peak between AD 300 and 900 and their achievements in art and architecture were matched with their knowledge of maths and astronomy. Millions of Maya continue to live in Mexico and their textiles are among the finest in the Americas.Chloe Sayer is a specialist in Latin American Art and Culture. As a fellow of the Royal Anthropological Institute, she has made ethnographic collections and carried out fieldwork in Mexico and Belize for the British Museum.
