London's Country Houses

Lecture on Monday 4th October 2010 at 1:45PM

Lecturer: Mrs Caroline Knight
Venue: Larruperz Centre

Due to the rapid expansion of London, many houses that were in the countryside located in villages or on the banks of the Thames are now within Greater London. Several are owned by the National Trust. Examples of these are Ham House and Osterley House. The trust also owns Sutton House, Lindsey House in Chelsea and Rainham Hall. In addition, English Heritage owns Marble Hill and Chiswick House. Mrs Knight will examine the development of these houses and their gardens and will compare them with country houses located on great estates far from the capital.

Mrs Knight is an architectural historian whose particular interest is in 16th – 18th century British town and country houses. She has lectured widely at the V&A, the Art Fund, the Georgian Group, University College London, the Courtauld Institute and the Cooper-Hewitt Museum in New York.
